Mountain and outdoors trips are the least forgiving of bad packing. Unlike a city, you cannot duck into a shop when the weather turns. The destinations below range from alpine and glacier terrain to rainforest and volcanic landscapes, but they share a common packing principle: layers, weather protection, and footwear that can handle more than pavement.

Climate and conditions

Mountain weather changes fast and does not care what the forecast said that morning. Temperatures drop roughly 5°F for every 1,000 feet of elevation gain. Nights are cold year-round in the mountains, even in destinations with warm days. Always plan for 10-20°F colder than your arrival city once you head up.

Essential packing tips

  • A real waterproof shell, not a water-resistant one. Rain in the mountains soaks through cheap jackets in minutes.
  • Hiking or trail-running shoes broken in before you fly. Blisters on day one ruin the entire trip.
  • Base, mid, and shell layer system. You should be able to dress for 50°F or 80°F by swapping pieces rather than outfits.
  • Merino wool socks, two pairs minimum. They dry overnight and resist smell after multi-day wear.
  • A daypack that fits a water bladder, rain shell, snacks, and an extra layer. 18 to 24 liters is the sweet spot.
  • Headlamp plus a small first-aid kit including blister care. You will use both more than you expect.
