Asia Packing Lists

Asia is the hardest continent to generalize about. East Asia has distinct four-season weather that looks a lot like the northern US or Europe, while Southeast Asia is tropical year-round with a wet season you will absolutely notice. The right packing list depends heavily on which sub-region you are visiting and what time of year.

Climate at a glance

East Asia (Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong) has cold winters, hot humid summers, and genuinely pleasant spring and fall shoulder seasons. Southeast Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia) stays warm all year but the wet season from roughly May through October brings heavy daily rain in most places. Always check the specific destination for monsoon timing.

What to pack for Asia

• Lightweight, quick-dry clothing in Southeast Asia. Cotton takes forever to dry when it is already 90% humidity.
• A compact umbrella or packable rain shell during wet season, no matter how cheap the local markets look.
• Modest clothing for temple and shrine visits across almost every Asian country, not just the Muslim-majority ones.
• A Type A or Type C plug adapter for most of the region, plus a voltage check for anything that is not dual-voltage.
• Comfortable slip-on shoes for Japanese homes, temples, and many restaurants where shoes come off at the door.
