Middle East Packing Lists
Desert heat, marble-cool mosques, and packing for modesty.
2 destinations covered
The Middle East rewards thoughtful packing more than most regions. Days can hit brutal desert heat while air-conditioned malls and shrines stay chilly. Dress codes are real, not suggestions, and vary from conservative in Saudi Arabia to very relaxed in parts of Tel Aviv. Knowing where you are going changes everything.
Climate at a glance
Summers from June through September are extreme across the Gulf, routinely exceeding 40°C (104°F). Winters are mild and genuinely pleasant in most of the region, which is why the tourism peak is December through March. Rainfall is rare almost everywhere.
What to pack for Middle East
- Loose, light, light-colored clothing that covers shoulders and knees — comfort and modesty at the same time.
- A light scarf or shawl that can cover your head on short notice, useful for women visiting mosques or shrines.
- Real sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen — the desert sun is not the same as a beach in Florida.
- A reusable water bottle — tap water is safe in most cities but you will drink much more than you expect.
- One warm layer for cold restaurants, mosques, and winter evenings in the desert.
