Oceania Packing Lists

Beaches, reefs, cities, and ski fields within a short flight of each other.

5 destinations covered

Oceania spans tropical Pacific islands, temperate Australian cities, and genuinely alpine parts of New Zealand, sometimes in a single itinerary. The good news is English is everywhere, plugs are consistent, and dress codes are relaxed. The packing challenge is handling wildly different climates in one trip.

Climate at a glance

Seasons are flipped from the northern hemisphere. January is peak summer and July is winter. Northern Australia and the Pacific islands stay tropical year-round with a wet season. Southern Australia and New Zealand have real four-season weather, and New Zealand can drop close to freezing at night even in summer in the mountains.

What to pack for Oceania

  • High-SPF reef-safe sunscreen — the UV index in the southern hemisphere is genuinely worse than most travelers expect.
  • A rash guard for snorkeling or swimming in reef areas, both for sun and for jellyfish in some seasons.
  • Layers for New Zealand even in summer — mountain weather changes fast.
  • A Type I plug adapter (the angled three-prong shape used in Australia and New Zealand).
  • Sturdy walking shoes for hikes and a pair of sandals for beach days, no need for fancy footwear anywhere.
